About Itchy Inflamed Skin
You may find yourself asking, “What causes itchy, inflamed skin?”
Many answers range from mild symptoms to others that are more severe. Dry skin or xerosis, eczema is commonly known as dermatitis, psoriasis, hives, and psoriasis is just a few common inflammatory skin conditions. You may begin to notice a skin rash or redness or scaly skin.
Eczema is the most common type of inflammatory skin condition. It is estimated that 20 % of infants and children and 5-10% of all adults are affected. An inherited gene, filaggrin, can trigger eczema in patients. Since eczema is not a reaction to histamine, antihistamines often do not improve the symptoms.
Common areas affected are where the body bends: below, wrists, behind the knees, and ears.
As eczema conditions worsen, the skin may begin to drain fluid and over time, will dry and become crusty. Dry, crusty scabbing could indicate an infection.
Dry Skin (Xerosis )
Mild symptoms of dry, itchy skin can have some common exposure causes. Some common symptoms include dehydration, sun exposure, smoking, and even high levels of stress cause dry skin.
When the immune system releases a histamine response, you will see hives (urticaria). Swelling results from blood vessels beginning to leak and expand. Common occurrences include food or other environmental triggers, such as heat or insect bites.
Depending upon the trigger, some hives may benefit from oral histamine treatments paired with topical ointment treatments.
